Origin: Boston Massachusetts
True modern Boston Terriers can trace their heritage to Hooper's Judge, a dog that was owned by Robert
C. Hooper of Boston. In approximately 1865. Hooper acquired Judge, a cross between an English
Bulldog and an English White Terrier. Judge was strong and weighed about 32 pounds. Hooper's Judge
was bred to Bunnett's Gyp (also known as Kate), producing Well's Eph, a dog that appears in the
pedigrees of Boston Terriers today.
The Boston Terrier has been an AKC recognized breed since 1893.
The Boston Terrier is actually closer to the Bulldog family than to the Terriers both in appearance and
temperament, being descended from the English Bulldog (with a possible contribution from the English
White Terrier).
The Tuxedo-clad little dog with the captivating expression and the big heart is known as the Boston
Terrier. The Boston Terrier is a lively, compact well-balanced dog. The breed is classified according to
size: under 15 pounds; 15 to 20 pounds, and 20 to 25 pounds. Regardless of size, the Boston should be
square in appearance; the length of leg should be balanced with the length of back. The Boston is sturdy,
neither spindly nor coarse.
Boston Terriers are wonderful pets. Their compact size allows them to live comfortably in small
apartments. They are very clean, affectionate, and mild tempered. Daily exercise is a must, as with any
dog.
